Schon immer wurden militärische Einsatzmesser unabhängig von ihrer Zweckbestimmung mehr als Werkzeug für die im Feld und Dienstalltag anfallenden Arbeiten, denn als Waffe verwendet. Gezielt auf diesen Zweck angelegte Ausschreibungen oder Auftragsvergaben in der Geschichte regulär ausgegebener Dienstmesser sind selten, wurden aber vereinzelt von klugen Beschaffungsorganen immer wieder vorgenommen. Als Beispiele anführen ließen sich hier das M1880 Hunting und M1890 Intrenching Knife der US-Armee, das wenig bekannte und seltene Kampf- und Wirtschaftsmesser 45 der Wehrmacht sowie das immer noch im Dienst befindliche MOD-Knife der britischen Armee.
Das HK MP7 Personal Duty Knife (kurz PDK) steht in dieser Tradition und ist kompromisslos auf Vielseitigkeit für sämtliche taktischen und praktischen Aufgaben von Armee und Behörden konzipiert. Es erfüllt alle Ansprüche an ein Einsatzmesser sowie an ein modernes Outdoor-, Bushcraft- und Jagdmesser. Da es sich um einen persönlichen Ausrüstungsgegenstand des Soldaten handelt wurde es in Anlehnung an die Maschinenpistole HK MP7, die dem Personal-Defense-Weapon-Konzept (PDW) folgt, als MP7 Personal Duty Knife (PDW) bezeichnet. Es übernimmt starke funktionale Eigenschaften der namensgebenden Feuerwaffe wie Ergonomie und Grifftextur, Führigkeit, hochwertige Verarbeitung und Zuverlässigkeit. Für das Herzstück, die universelle schwarz beschichtete Spearpoint-Klinge wurde der schwedische Stahl 14C28N gewählt. Durch den Zusatz von Mangan und Stickstoff (Mangan erhöht die Lösbarkeit von Stickstoff in der Matrix) hat dieser Stahl eine hohe Härte, Schnitthaltigkeit und Korrosionsbeständigkeit bei gleichzeitig feinem Gefüge. Hierdurch steigern sich Schock- und Bruchelastizität sowie die Nachschärfbarkeit. Der Erl geht vollständig durch den Griff, wie in der Fangriemenöse zu sehen ist. Er liegt am Ende jedoch nicht frei, um auf diese Stelle Druck oder einen leichten Schlag mit dem Handballen ausüben zu können. Der einteilige fest angespritzte Griff ist aus unverwüstlichem glasfaserverstärktem Nylon (FRN) gefertigt. Um allen Anwendungssituationen gerecht zu werden, wurde für das HK MP7 PDK ein modulares Tragesystem auf Basis einer Kydex-Scheide entwickelt. Der Sitz des Messers in der präzisen Formpassung ist tief und sicher, sodass auf einen zusätzlichen Verschluss verzichtet werden konnte. Wahlweise kann eine kräftige Gurtschlaufe aus Nylon oder ein Molle-kompatibler Stahlclip befestigt werden.
